Sony 75-300mm telephoto zoom review - new video tour

Sony's 75-300mm telephoto zoom lens remains a popular option for owners of Alpha DSLRs. It's a common bundle with the earlier A100 and likely to find itself fitted to many of the new A200 bodies. As such it's an ideal time to revisit our Sony 75-300mm lens review with a brand new video tour, using the Alpha A100 body. Remember the new A200 has the same sensor, so our quality results are equally applicable for this new body. So to see - and hear - how this budget telephoto zoom compares, check out our Sony 75-300mm video tour. Read More

My must-have Symbian S60 apps

My must-have Symbian S60 apps
I am onto my 4th consecutive Nokia S60 handset now (6680, E90, 6121 classic, E71) and one reason for my loyalty is the stable of everyday apps I am familiar with the operation of. Here, for all to see, is a list of those very apps, all of which can be obtained free of charge, legally (except WinLive for non E/N series handsets).

- Calcium - calculator by mtvoid
- Mobile GMaps - uses the Google map and satellite image tiles with a slight hack and many other maps "out of the box". Allows automatic upload of your position to a public or private map online.
- Google Maps for Mobile - if you don't have a GPS it will use the network to approximate your location. Also allows you to enter start and end address and have it show you the route (no voice directions though)
- Mirggi - S60 native IRC client, under constant development and a very nice app.
- Windows Live Messenger client, found in the "Download" menu on E and N series handsets or here for other handsets
- Qik - a live video streaming app that is still in Beta but works pretty well already

Feel free to comment below with any must-haves that I have missed, thanks!

Sony CyberShot DSC-W110

Yesterday I purchased a Sony CyberShot DSC-W110 from Harvey Norman, I also had the option to buy a bag and spare battery for only $20! Here are a few photos of what I got..

The Boxes

Everything Unpacked

Camera Front and Back

Ok.. All of these photos were taken by another Sony camera (not the same model as this though) apart from the boxes one which I took with the DSC-W110.

Before walking into Harvey Norman yesterday I knew next to nothing about cameras, I knew how to take photos and that was pretty much it.. So I wanted someone to explain to me different features cameras have like, 3x zoom and 4x zoom - will I notice the difference, if 7.2 mega pixels is any better than 8 mega pixels for all round use and a few other things. What I really wanted to know if I could take photos that would focus on a certain object and make the background blurry, the girl who served me didn't exactly know how to but said they all can do this, I took her word for it. Too be perfectly honest she was absolutely no help to me, she may as well of given me the cabinet keys and let me play with them all (which I did anyway).

I decided on the DSC-W110 because;

A) I like Sony products, Ive used Sony cameras before.
B) I got a bag and battery for $20.
C) This camera didn't feel 'plasticy' like some of the others.
D) All my gadgets are black hence I chose a black camera.

So far I really like this camera and am anxious to explore some of its other features, other than the Auto mode!

I havn't really had a chance to take any decent photos yet but when I do, Ill post a follow up to this blog entry.

GOOD Magazine on Vampire Energy

GOOD Magazine on Vampire Energy
July 30, 2008 Power wastage associated with standby modes in consumer electronics devices makes up a staggering 1% of global carbon dioxide emissions, and costs the average household the equivalent of one months bill every year. GOOD Magazine has dubbed this wastage "vampire energy" and assembled a compelling graph that shows the average yearly cost of standby modes in common household devices - with the increasingly common plasma TV costing a whopping $159.76 per year to leave on standby...

Olympus E-3 - full review and video tour

The Olympus E-3 is the long-awaited new flagship of the Four Thirds standard. The E-3 doubles its predecessor's resolution to 10 Megapixels, features tough weather-proof construction, built-in image stabilisation, a fully-articulated screen with Live View, and of course the legendary SSWF anti-dust filter. Olympus has also addressed two concerns with the Four Thirds standard by equipping the E-3 with a large viewfinder and a new 11-point AF system which it claims is the World's fastest. It's an impressive specification, but directly up against models like the Nikon D300, not to mention the more affordable Canon EOS 40D and Sony Alpha A700. To find out how it compares and whether it's a contender in the semi-pro market, check out our Olympus E-3 review - and as always for a demonstration of its features, see our Olympus E-3 video tour. Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi - full review and video tour

Canon EOS 450D / Digital Rebel XSi - full review and video tour
Canon's EOS 450D - or Digital Rebel XSi as it's known in North America - is the company's latest DSLR and the successor to the hugely popular EOS 400D / Rebel XTi. It features a raft of improvements including higher 12.2 Megapixel resolution, a stabilised kit lens, a bigger 3in screen, Live View with the choice of two different AF systems, a bigger viewfinder, quicker continuous shooting, a number of processing features from the higher-end EOS 40D, and PC remote control software. That's an impressive list but does Canon have another best-seller on its hands? Find out in our Canon EOS 450D / Rebel XSi review where we'll compare it against its predecessor and key rivals including Sony's Alpha A350. And as always, for a demonstration of its highlights, check out our Canon EOS 450D / Rebel XSi video tour.

New Nikon D60 - deja-vu anyone?

New Nikon D60 - deja-vu anyone?
Today Nikon announced the D60, a new budget DSLR which bears an uncanny resemblance to what we expect to become the discontinued D40x. It shares the same 10 Megapixel sensor, same 2.5in screen and essentially the same body and controls. New to the D60 are a stop-motion recording mode, eye sensors which switch the screen off when you're looking through the viewfinder, Active D-Lighting, and an anti-dust system which both vibrates the sensor unit along with using an airflow system to channel particles from the image path. Overall though, it's a minor refresh of an existing model, and as such a disappointment especially without a built-in AF motor for non-AF-S lenses. Those hoping to see a D80 successor will have to keep their fingers crossed Nikon's holding something back for PMA. The D60 is expected in February, costing 529 GBP / 791 EUR with the recently-announced stabilised DX 18-55mm VR kit lens. See the complete Nikon DSLR range.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 / TZ4 with 10x Wide-Angle Zoom

Panasonic has today introduced two new Lumix digital cameras, 9.1-megapixel DMC-TZ5 and 8.1-megapixel DMC-TZ4, each featuring a 28mm wide-angle 10x optical zoom Leica DC lens (equivalent to 28-280mm on a 35mm film camera). The DMC-TZ5 newly integrates the capability of recording 720p HD (high-definition) motion pictures together with its direct output function allowing users to enjoy watching both still and motion pictures in HD quality on a large-screen HDTV. Sony Alpha DSLR-A350 - full review and video tour

Sony Alpha DSLR-A350 - full review and video tour
The Alpha A350 is the top model in Sony's latest triplet of DSLRs. It takes A200's body with built-in stabilisation, swaps the 10.2 Megapixel sensor for one with 14.2 Megapixels, equips it with Live View and hinges the 2.7in screen so it can tilt up or down for easier framing at high or low angles. The Live View also employs a secondary sensor in the viewfinder, which means the normal AF system can work as quickly as normal and there's none of the usual noises or delay. On paper, the A350 looks like being one of the most important DSLRs of 2008, but does it live up to its expectations in practice? Find out in our Sony Alpha DSLR A350 review and as always, check out the highlights in our A350 video tour.
